Marlo Wiemer, mechatronics technician in Wilhelmshaven

Varied tasks, working in small teams and contact with many different colleagues – these are the things that Marlo Wiemer appreciates about his job. The 23-year old is responsible for the maintenance and repair of gantry crane spreaders at EUROGATE Technical Services in Wilhelmshaven.

Wiemer is a “true EUROGATE type”. After school, which he completed in Rodenkirchen, he started his mechatronics technician apprenticeship at EUROGATE Technical Services in Bremerhaven. “Even when I was in school, I knew that I wanted to do something technical,” says the young man. He brought with him manual dexterity and an ability to grasp things quickly. He completed his apprenticeship at the start of 2012 and received an overall grade of “good”.

His first assignments in Bremerhaven followed on. This is where he learned a lot about spreaders, without which the container cranes would not be able to lift the standardised containers. “Spreaders are extendible frames that can be set to the length of the containers and they grip the so-called corner castings of the container,” explains Wiemer. The lifting gear has all sorts of electrical and pneumatic components that are repaired and monitored by mechatronics technicians.

In the very first year after his apprenticeship, Wiemer had the opportunity to go to Rotterdam where a major manufacturer of these kinds of spreaders works. “We inspected new equipment for our gantries and rail cranes in Wilhelmshaven, that was a fantastic experience,” he says. The trainee tradesman got several opportunities to go abroad and gain experience.

In his spare time, Marlo Wiemer is involved in the volunteer fire brigade of Rodenkirchen, where he lives. He joined the youth fire brigade when he was just eleven years old. Nowadays, he is looking after the younger ones as a youth officer.
